How to Choose Effective New Year's Resolutions
As we say goodbye to 2020 and look towards 2021, many are intent on “exercising more” and “eating better” in the new year. However, there is a reason why only about 55% of individuals stick to resolutions for a full month. We’ve done our research and have compiled tips and tricks for how to make resolutions that stick and can eventually become a part of your lifestyle!
Make sure your resolutions are S.M.A.R.T
Having S.M.A.R.T goals (Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Realistic, and Time-Bound) is extremely important to achieving long-term success. SMART goal setting provides clarity, helps you find your focus, and motivates you to reach relevant, realistic, and achievable goals.
Focus on one goal at a time
When you have too many resolutions going into the new year, you usually end up falling short - on most or even all of them. The American Psychological Association (APA) recommends focusing your efforts on one resolution at a time for an increased chance of long-term success.
Have an accountability partner
According to Signature Analytics, when people know they are being held accountable by others for their actions, they will work harder. Research shows that when someone publicly shares their goals, they have around a 65% chance of success. However, having a specific accountability partner boosts that chance to 95%.
